Authority and backlinks is not scored. Without a Moz or Bing key, and with the Common Crawl link graph returning no referring domains for any domain tested, that dimension is unmeasured rather than poor. It is excluded rather than guessed at.
Revenue comes from sign blanks sold to trade buyers: sign shops, municipalities, contractors. The audit found no page anywhere on the site that speaks to them. That single absence explains the weak result in Google and the weak result in AI answers at the same time.
When ChatGPT is asked “where do sign shops buy sign blanks,” it names US Standard Sign, CPC Sign Supply, Dornbos and Grimco. That is not a mysterious AI problem. There is no Hall Signs page answering that question, so there is nothing to cite and nothing to rank.
The underlying build is better than most stores on this platform. Pages render fully without JavaScript, so Google and AI crawlers can read everything. Duplicate-address handling across filters, sorting and pagination is genuinely well done. A 243-page crawl returned a clean result on every single page, with no broken links and no redirect chains.
| Issue | Severity | What we found | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dead store subdomain still ranking | Critical | store.hallsigns.com drew 815 clicks and 8,056 impressions in 12 months at average position 8.2. It redirects to a secure address whose certificate belongs to an unrelated business, so every visitor sees a security warning. Nothing on the main site links to it. | Restore a valid certificate, or redirect the subdomain to the main site. |
| A broken address inside the sitemap | Critical | The page sitemap submits https://www.hallsigns.comnull to Google. It does not resolve. A platform fault where an empty field was joined onto the domain. | Find the page entry with the blank address field and correct it. |
| HTTPS enforcement switched off | High | Every response carries an instruction that tells browsers to discard any remembered HTTPS-only policy, rather than simply not setting one. | Set a one-year policy. Do not enable the browser preload list until the store subdomain above is fixed, or that address breaks completely. |
| Sitemap never declared | High | robots.txt contains no sitemap line at all, and the conventional /sitemap.xml address returns a not-found page. The real sitemap sits at a non-standard address. | Declare it in robots.txt and redirect the conventional address to it. |
| AI crawlers slowed to one page per 10 seconds | Medium | Around 35 AI crawlers, including those behind ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI features, are permitted but rate-limited. At that speed a full pass over the catalogue takes roughly five hours. | Consider easing to 2 to 5 seconds for the engines whose citations are being pursued. |
This is the weakest dimension in the audit, and the most fixable. The pattern is consistent: informational pages about sign meanings are reasonably built, while the pages that actually sell are close to empty.
Both areas share a useful property: the faults are in page templates rather than in individual products, so a single change corrects all 1,697 products at once.
Structured data is the machine-readable summary that lets Google show rich results and lets AI engines identify a business with confidence. Hall Signs has a partial, dated implementation.
Desktop is fine. Mobile is not, and one fault causes most of it.
Product images are published without stated dimensions, so the page visibly jumps around as it loads on a phone. Adding those dimensions in one template is the single biggest speed win available, and it fixes every product page at once. The remaining weight comes from a duplicated script bundle and a pair of duplicate font requests.
161 non-brand searches sit between position 5 and 20, carrying 672,511 impressions between them, and those produce just 1,521 clicks. Ranking mid-page-one while almost nobody clicks is the pattern to explain.
| Search term | Impressions | Position | Click rate | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| divided highway sign | 42,334 | 5.6 | 0.09% | Someone checking what a sign means, not buying one. |
| stop ahead sign | 30,864 | 6.1 | 0.04% | Same, and the site competes against itself here across four near-identical pages. |
| winding road sign | 26,470 | 5.7 | 0.06% | Same pattern. |
| aluminum signs | 21,067 | 7.4 | 0.44% | Commercial, but the wrong audience: this result page is full of consumer print shops. |
| aluminum sign blanks | 4,387 | 3.9 | 3.26% | The one that works. A trade result page, trade buyers, and Hall Signs belongs there. |
The contrast in the last row is the whole strategy. On the term that matches the business, the click rate is thirty to eighty times higher than on the informational terms. Those two blanks category pages are also the top revenue-relevant pages in search: 892 and 430 clicks respectively, on 129,358 and 77,968 impressions.
We put twelve real buyer questions to ChatGPT with web search enabled and recorded every source it cited. Hall Signs appeared in two answers: “best aluminum sign blanks supplier” and “best reflective sign blanks.” Both are its highest-converting categories. The other ten answers fall into three losing patterns.
| # | Target | Type | Angle |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Opt Signs, manufacturer roundup and thickness guide | Editorial | Appears as a source on two separate questions, so it is a real publication to approach. Ask for inclusion in the roundup and offer a better thickness explainer. |
| 2 | Thomasnet, aluminum sign blanks directory | Directory | Cited on the main blanks question. Claiming and completing the listing is low effort for repeat exposure on the money category. |
| 3 | r/CommercialPrinting and r/signshop | Community | Both cited as sources, and both are the actual buyer. Genuine participation in substrate and supplier discussions. |
